About Coeliac Australia
Coeliac Australia’s Vision is to enhance the quality of life of people requiring a gluten free diet for life and to encourage and support research towards a cure or other ethical forms of treatment for coeliac disease.
Coeliac Australia was formed to provide a forum to promote the national welfare and uniformity of purpose and objectives of the state Coeliac organisations throughout Australia. Coeliac Australia provides a framework for the states to work together, share resources and fulfill this vision. The only members of Coeliac Australia are each state organisation.
Information and support to those diagnosed with coeliac disease and their families, sufferers of dermatitis herpetiformis and those medically diagnosed as requiring a gluten free diet is provided at a state level.
Through membership of your state Coeliac organisation, information is available about the gluten free diet, ingredients, where to buy gluten free food, recipes and cooking, eating out, overseas travel and research. Activities such as information seminars, cooking demonstrations, shopping tours, gluten free food expos and children’s events may be held. In various areas, volunteer contact people provide a local support network for members in their region.
The combined membership of the state organisations stands at over 24,000.
Coeliac Australia is committed to providing its members with the most current and relevant information. We are fortunate to have a panel of Medical and Health Professionals available to advise on best practice for diagnosis and management of coeliac disease and to ensure we remain up to date with current coeliac disease and gluten research. Our Clinical Advisory consists of leading adult and paediatric Gastroenterologists, Immunologists, General Practitioners and Accredited Practising Dietitians.
Individual membership services are provided at a state level. Each state Coeliac Australia is a not-for-profit organisation reliant on membership and community support. All funds raised on behalf of the organisations are re-invested into the provision of membership resources and services, research and public awareness.
Membership is open to a person:
diagnosed with coeliac disease
diagnosed with dermatitis herpetiformis
diagnosed as requiring a gluten free diet
A letter from a registered medical practitioner to verify one of the above is required for membership.
Health professionals, food manufacturers and those who cater for the gluten free diet are also welcome to join as professional associate members.
Each State Coeliac Australia provides valuable, personal assistance to members via a centrally located Support Centre and Area Contacts throughout each State. Coeliac Australia provides the latest information on research sourced from expert medical professionals, and positive ways of adapting to a gluten free lifestyle which may initially seem overwhelming. Each State Support Centre is up to date on all acceptable foods and can answer questions and offer encouragement, reassurance and suggestions.
